Aberdeen 1-1 Kairat Almaty - Europa League

1 - 1
Kairat Almaty

The Aberdeen Europa League dream, as far as qualifying for the tournament properly went, ended on Thursday as a draw with Kairat Almaty at Pittodrie wasn't enough on aggregate with the team from Kazakhstan was close though!

Ultimately the first half of the first half in the first leg proved the Dons' undoing with those two goals, in fairness not really too much that could have been done to prevent them, making the difference with Thursday's one-one draw seeing Kairat going through three-two on aggregate.

An away goal in the first leg gave Aberdeen hope, and after weathering an early storm and going through the first half with the second leg goalless hopes were raised a comeback was still on but when Gohou scored early in the second half, to make it three-one on aggregate it looked over, which it would have been if Serginho hadn't been denied by the crossbar.

Within a minute of the visitors hitting the bar the Dons were back in the tie when McLean headed home with a little over five-minutes to play.

A final throw of the dice saw Quinn go without inches of forcing extra time but it wasn't to be for the Reds this season as the European adventure ended.

However, McInnes rightly said after the game he was 'proud' of his teams performances in the six European ties but surely as runners-up in the Scottish Premiership last season the Dons shouldn't have been required to play so many ties for a chance in Europe?
